President Obama and his lovely wife Michelle have arrived in the UK for their three day state visit. They visited Ireland first as he had ancestors there and wanted to trace his roots but they left earlier than planned as the UK is expecting ash cloud from Iceland anytime now.
The President and his wife were greeted by Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall and then went off to Buckingham Palace to meet Prince William and the new Duchess of Cambridge along with the Queen and Prince Philip.
We love the new Duchess and she seems to win hands down in the fashion stakes overtaking the First Lady and also Sam Cam the PM's wife. Kate seems to be seen as a new fashion icon and chooses off-the-peg outfits. Yesterday marked the new Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's first official duty as a royal couple since the wedding last month.
After the meeting the President enjoyed an official lunch at Buckingham Palace for over 70 people.
After lunch the Obama's headed over to Westminster Abbey to lay a wreath at the tomb of the unknown warrior and then headed to Downing Street to meet the Prime Minister and his wife. David Cameron and the President then went to a local school to show the children how well they played table tennis?
Last night the Queen hosted a glittering white tie state banquet at Buckingham Palace in the ballroom for over 170 people. There were three former Prime Ministers in attendance as well as some celebrities such as Tom Hanks, Kevin Spacey, Helena Bonham Carter with her husband Tim Burton.
The Queen presented President Obama with a specially bound selection of facsimile letters from Queen Victoria to various presidents. Mr Obama gave her a specially bound selection of photographs and documents of the first state visit to the U.S. in 1939 by the Queens Parents. The Queen gave Michelle Obama a lovely brooch and in turn the Mr Obama gave Prince Philip some custom made equipment for his ponies.
